“We’ve never been here before, and we are quite taken by your area!” . . . . .“The scenery around here is beautiful!” . . . . . “This place reminds me of the Vermont countryside!” . . . . . “We usually travel along the coast, and we had no idea!”

These are the kinds of the comments we hear routinely from newcomers to Union and the surrounding area.  While the magnificent Maine shoreline perennially has received most of the attention, our region, a bit inland, is still being discovered.  While the rockbound coast has dramatic crashing surf, quaint fishing villages, lighthouses, and of course, lobster, our area offers dairy farms, blueberry barrens, lush river valleys, lakes, ponds, and scenic vistas.

Geographically, the Town of Union is situated at the intersection of three numbered routes: 17, 131, and 235, about midway between the state capital of Augusta and the coast.  It lies within the watershed of two scenic rivers, the Saint George and the Medomak.  Some of the towns surrounding Union include Appleton, Hope, Rockport, Washington, Waldoboro, and Warren.

Perhaps due to location or maybe necessity, Union has become a sort of mini-economic center for the bordering towns, with an appropriate mix of retail, banking, light industrial, and service businesses within the town.  It is an exceptionally pleasant place to live and work.

For even greater employment and commercial opportunities there are several cities within an easy commute of the Union area. The City of Rockland, undergoing a decade-long renaissance, lies about 25 minutes to the east.  Augusta, with its government services, employment, and shopping is about 35 minutes west.  Belfast, another city enjoying an extreme makeover, is located 40 minutes north and is the Maine home of  MBNA/Bank of America, the credit card giant.
